Your Aadhar Data Isn’t As Safe As You Think It Is.

By On January 11, 2017
When the Aadhar program was launched in 2009, its goal and importance were pretty unclear to the masses. In fact, many presumed it to be just another government program that they have to be involved in.
how to save aadhar details from getting stolen

But things are different now. Aadhar is a national identification number and eases the tiring KYC process at many platforms at many levels now. The digitally stored biometric and demographic data just speeds things up.

But did you know that the same Aadhar number puts your most personal details at a risk too?

Yes, there are have been instances where a person’s biometric data (photograph and ten fingerprints and two iris scans) have been stolen from the central database and apparently used for identity frauds. People who haven’t used their Aadhaar card for a while have received an email from UIDAI stating that their data has been accessed via biometric authentication.

And well, that is obviously quite alarming!  So, what can be done now? How do we save ourselves from identity thefts?

The manner in which these biometric details are collected on various platforms without any safeguard is what makes it prone to such misuse. And the only option we are left with is by locking our biometric data down that is stored on UIDAI’s servers.
This step involves adding an extra layer of security to ensure that such sensitive data is not mishandled in any way.

And here’s the process how you can lock or unlock your Aadhar UIDAI biometric details:

  • Head to the UIDAI website’s biometric lock page and enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number.
  • Enter the Security Code that shows up in the image below your Aadhaar number.
  • Click Generate OTP. This will send a one-time password via an SMS to your registered phone number. Enter the received OTP on the same page.
  • Click Verify and check Enable biometric locking that appears on the next page.
  • Next, click Enable button after checking Enable biometric locking.
  • In case you want to disable the lock, uncheck Enable biometric locking and click Disable.

Done!

Do note that locking biometric data means that the person can authenticate Aadhaar based transactions or requests for information only via the OTP sent to their mobile number, and not with their biometric details.

Is Ahmedabad Safe For its Women ?

By On January 06, 2017

With recent cases of mass molestation in Bengaluru on NYE, we find out
Do you feel safe when returning home after a late-night party? Do you fear being eve teased as you travel from home to office every day? Do you feel uncomfortable sporting a pair of shorts and crop top in a cinema hall or a restaurant only because you may get unwanted stares or comments?
The safety standard of any city can be judged by the safety of its women. While Gujarat appears in the list of top five safest states in India we speak to our women to find out if they feel guarded when venturing out alone or at an odd time.

IS A DRY STATE SAFER FOR WOMEN?
While a lot of Amdavadis may crib about the fact that Gujarat is a dry state, it also has its own advantages.“Ahmedabad is relatively safer because of the traditional culture that it still holds. There are no wild parties that happen at large scale in other cities. It is usu ally the small friends and family gatherings that people engage in,“ says academician Indira Hirway . Yes, we miss out on all the fun that comes along with enjoying nightlife with friends, club hopping and having a gala time, but this also means there is overall peace in the state. “Being a dry state, we don't have pubs and discs. Surat, Vadodara and Ahmedabad have a night life which is free from liquor, and is lived out mostly on the streets. The absence of drunkards in public places contributes to women's safety in a big way ,“ says lawyer Avani Mehta who frequently travels at odd hours for work.Whether it's Manek Chowk and Law Garden in Ahmedabad, Ghod Dod Road and Dumas in Surat or Fatehgunj, Ratri Bazaar, Alkapuri in Baroda, there are youngsters on their two wheelers, hanging out in these streets long past midnight, sharing a cup of tea or coffee while chit-chatting with friends. “Gujarat surely has its share of fun and freedom, but minus the feeling of being unsafe. After all, nigh life with loved ones must be about merriment, memorable conversations and good behaviour; not driven by alcohol,“ says social activist Leena Sanghvi.

SAFETY FIRST
While Gujarat has a good number of college-going girls and working women, there are rare instances where they have faced harassment or been physically abused in public spots. “It is because of the law abiding and co-operative nature of our citizens that Gujarat is safe for women. We have various departments of police on patrol that keep a tab on drunk driving. For women, we have various cells for emergency that are active round the clock. We also take help of the officials from Suraksha Samiti who keep their eyes and ears open all the time,“ says Deepan Bhadran, DCP (crime), Ahmedabad. A state can't turn into a safe place overnight. It is the little precautions and safety measures taken by people and government that lead to building of a safe place.
“Most universities and colleges have a sexual harassment cell where the victim can open up with conformity to anonymity . While low key harassment cases keep happening every day at places like riverfront and Lal Darwaza, there are no major molestation cases like the ones in bigger metro cities. Also, the city planners need to plan the city in a way where there are no empty streets at any point of time. There must be patrolling 247. There is also a need to plan more number of public transport for late night to assure the safety of women during night time,“ says Darshini Mahadevia, professor, CEPT. To sum it up, safety of women in the society at large isn't just about having laws and guidelines, but also about every individual's mental framework and the values they are brought up with. “It's high time we get rid of the tendency of suppressing women and nurturing boys. A change in our thoughts and behavior is the only way to help build a safe, healthy society,“ says Hirway .

Two cyclists from Ahmedabad will pedal with message of ‘Zero Waste’

By On January 02, 2017
AHMEDABAD: A team of two cyclists from Ahmedabad will pedal from the city to Delhi — a distance of 1,020 km to spread the message of 'Make Your Home Zero Waste.'

The 11-day journey of Sanjeeta Singh Negi, 51, and Piyush Shah, 57, will begin from Gandhi Ashram on January 2 and will end at Raj Ghat in New Delhi. Negi said: "Zero waste is a philosophy that ensures that all products are recycled and reused. No trash is sent to landfills and incinerators. The dry waste along with kitchen waste should be given to rag pickers who can segregate it."

Negi has been a green volunteer, while Shah is a marathon runner from Gujarat who finds a mention in the Limca Book of Records for running on a treadmill for 181km in 29 hours in 2013.

"Our landfills are getting bigger and waste generation is increasing by the day. This is the story of every village, town and city of India. The problem is big, but together we can solve it. We are not talking about what big companies do and how they pollute our resources.

We are only talking about how an individual or a house can take care of the waste that may range between half a kilo and 20 kg," said Negi.Negi said that one can use his flower pot to make manure from kitchen waste. "First soil should be put and kitchen waste should be kept over it and again covered with soil. If there is moisture, add dry leaves or newspaper waste," She said.

"A person can keep on adding kitchen waste and once it is full, it should be left to turn into manure for 20 days. This waste can be used for plants. Around 200 families in Ahmedabad have began converting their kitchen waste into manure," she added.

Ahmedabad moves Gujarat high court for poker nod

By On January 02, 2017
AHMEDABAD: Gujarat high court (HC) on Monday admitted a petition filed by city-based Hotel Ramada seeking directions to the authorities to allow it to organize the game of poker on the ground that it is not gambling because it involves an element of skill.

Justice C L Soni has sought a reply from the state government, city police commissioner, Anandnagar police inspector and the municipal commissioner after they did not take any decision on the hotel's request to permit it to hold the game of poker. On the other hand, the Anandnagar cops called the hotel management on phone and asked them to stop the game.

Earlier, Justice J B Pardiwala recused himself from hearing this case. When the matter came up for the hearing before Justice Soni, petitioner's advocate Maulin Pandya submitted that since the authorities did not respond to representation, the hotel management went ahead with organizing the game, but was restricted following intervention by local cops.

Advocate Pandya placed two judgements by a US court and cited experts' opinions saying how poker is the game that involves element of skill and the game's outcome is not entirely on the basis of chance. Hence, it cannot be called gambling.

The lawyer also cited judgements from various high courts of India and laws prevalent in West Bengal that make it clear that poker is not gambling. In the states of Karnataka, West Bengal, Sikkim and Nagaland, this game is allowed to be played freely. Moreover, Gujarat government allows this game to be played online.

A similar complaint was made by the Young Men's Christian Association, Ahmedabad. Its petition is pending before the court. The HC will hear this matter on January 12.
