Free wi-fi for Amdavadis on city’s 603rd birthday, 4G

By On March 13, 2014

Taking a step closer towards smart city, citizens to get free wi-fi.

  • Pic for representational purpose
There might be no free lunch in life but Amdavadis are all set to enjoy free wi-fi service, albeit at selected places. Taking a step towards making Ahmedabad a smart city, free wi-fi services were launched at a few public places in the city on Wednesday.
Amdavadis can now access free wi-fi internet at a bandwidth of 30-40 Mbps bandwidth within 80-100 meters by Reliance Jio. The inauguration of the service was done on the Kankaria lakefront by chief minister Narendra Modi through video conferencing on Wednesday on the occasion of Ahmedabad’s 603rd birthday.
Under the e-nagar project, seven locations in the city have been made wi-fi enabled. The bandwidth of the internet, though much higher than 3G speed, is not 4G, said sources in the industry. Officials in the AMC, however, insisted that it is 4G. For the first three months, the service will be free for citizens, after which it will be chargeable.
Speaking to dna, an AMC official said: “Apart from Kankaria, public places like Sabarmati Ashram, Science City, ISCON Ganthia, BJ Medical College and other public places will be included.” The plan is to include 122 public places of the city, including railway station, bus stands and gardens within a year.
But what about security? State government, AMC and Reliance officials were unmoved. “One can access internet at the state locations. All one needs to do is select the wi-fi network, register their mobile number for a One Time Password (OTP) and after entering the password, one can access the internet,” said an AMC official. The project will be carried out on public-private-partnership (PPP) model and the revenue would be shared by AMC and Reliance.

Ahmedabad: Vintage cars set to rock ‘n’ roll today at heritage car and motorbike exhibition

By On March 09, 2014
Ahmedabad gets ready to host a unique heritage car and motorbike exhibition.

It is that time of the year when owners of vintage or classic cars wipe the dust off their vehicles and lure Amdavadis towards the beauty, rarity and engineering of their valuable collectibles.
Organised by Gujarat Vintage and Classic Car Club (GVCCC) around 45 classic beauties — four and two-wheelers — would be vying for attention at a place near Jivraj Park on Sunday. The exhibition is aimed at increasing awareness about the importance of preserving heritage vehicles.
“Gujarat has a rich history and collection of classic cars. But, never did we have the right platform to showcase our grandeur to the masses. Now, with the formation of GVCCC in 2012, we ensured that we would do this and a lot more to preserve these heritage beauties for a lifetime,” said Subodh Nath, a GVCCC founder.
He further stated that more people were not indulging in buying vintage cars according to their affordability. Buit soon, more of these four and two-wheeler beauties would be seen hurtling down the city roads in all their majestic splendour.
“We recently concluded a show in Vadodara and vintage cars from Ahmedabad formed the entire rally. There were around a couple from Vadodara and one from Surat. Twenty-two cars from the city drove down to Vadodara, a daunting task initially, noting the fact that we owners were also fearing if these cars could take the load of driving. But we triumphed!” gushed Nath.
This year, however, showstoppers for the exhibition were without doubt — black 1926 Ford Model T and 1912 (102-year-old) motorbike Indian — that was unveiled on Saturday.
Sharing details about Model T, Navroz Tarapore said: “This was the first ever mass produced automobile in history, dating as far back as 1908. The model owned by us is from the year 1926. She has not been on the road for almost 50 years. It took us nearly 10 years to restore it back from the state it was. My son Harsheed especially has been working on this car for the last four years, piece by piece, to restore it to its glory days. She had her first drive in so many years on Friday night when Harsheed decided to give her the road test. This is a great achievement for us and hence we have decided to showcase this beauty at this exhibition.”
Nath went on waxing eloquent about his motorbike. “It is a 1912 model and we acquired it in 1982. It took us almost 16 years to restore it specification wise. Last year, however, when it was displayed at the Cartier Rally in Mumbai, it bagged the best bike award of the show.”

Metabolism that goes vroom!

By On March 09, 2014
As we age and our lifestyles catch up with us (read increased hours sitting on the desk and staring at the computer, eating fast food mindlessly and ODing on caffeine to keep the eyes open) the first thing to crash is our metabolism — the process through which the body breaks down food into nutrients and decides what to keep and what not to.
A slow metabolism (aka hypothyroidism) means that the body stores more fat and absorbs less nutrients. Not just does this leave you on the wrong side of the weighing scale, but also in danger of suffering from high cholesterol, high blood sugar and high blood pressure and poor blood circulation.

Try yoga which will not only get you in great shape but also boost your overall health (a slow metabolism is linked to poor immune system). Yoga asanas focus on different areas in the body, helping you target the systems that are holding your metabolism back. Here are six asanas that will do just that for you:

GARUDASANA
Stand with knees slightly bent. Now lift your right leg and cross it over your left thigh, and hook your foot behind your left calf. Now, sink your hips down as you would if you were sitting on a chair. Cross your arms at your elbows and wrists in front of your chest. Hold for 45 seconds and return to start position and then switch sides. In addition to building strong, lean leg muscles, this pose energises the entire body and helps with digestion.

SALABHASANA

Lie down on your stomach with arms next to your body. Slowly, lift your head, upper body, arms, and legs off the floor, as high as you can. Hold for 45 seconds before releasing. Slowly return to start position. Repeat thrice. This helps improve your metabolism by strengthening the muscles in your legs and lower back.

SETU BANDHASANA

Lie on your back with knees bent, legs placed slightly apart and feet flat on the floor. Try to touch your heels with your fingertips. If not, bring your heels closer. Now, lift your hips up towards the ceiling. Bring your arms underneath your body and try to clasp your hands together. Hold for 45 seconds. Release and roll slowly back to the floor. Repeat twice. Because the chest is lifted up towards the chin, the thyroid gland is massaged.

SARVANGASANA
Lie on your back with arms along the body, palms facing the floor. Lift your legs and bring them to the Halasana pose. Bring your hands to your lower back for support, ensuring that your fingers are spread wide.

Slowly, lift your legs to the ceiling, one leg at a time. Try to get them as straight as possible by placing your hands close to your shoulders.

Beginners should stay in the pose for 30 seconds and gradually increase the time until it is comfortable to stay for five minutes. This pose stimulates your thyroid gland and stretches your neck and spine.

MATSYASANA

Lie on your back. Place your palms under your buttocks. Raise your elbows and lean on them by pressing them into the floor. Lift your chest up toward the ceiling so your back is arched. Bring your elbows towards each other and drop your head back towards the floor. This pose stretches the front of the neck and calms the body.

HALASANA

Lie on your back and lift your legs. Bring your arms alongside your body with palms down. Press into your hands and lift your legs over your head. Hold for 30 seconds. This pose increases circulation in your thyroid, adrenal, and pituitary glands. This helps send out feelgood endorphins and hormones throughout your body, balancing your metabolic system.
